Gorham silver was first established in 1831 by Jabez Gorham in partnership with Henry L. Webster. The flagship product of Gorham Silverware was of course spoons made from coin silver. Although the primary product was spoons, Gorham Silverware came in many forms including thimbles, jewellery and other small items.
In 1847 Jabez Gorham retired and was succeeded by his son, John Gorham who, unlike his father took full advantage of the tariff blocking imported silverware. John Gorham travelled far and wide to establish Gorham Manufacturing Company with the aid of master craftsmen and became highly influential in American silverware.
In 1895, Chantilly, a flatware pattern was designed by William C. Codman, this pattern later became the most famous Gorham Silverware pattern. The company later relocated to Fifth Avenue, New York in a building designed by Stanford White. In 1967 the company was sold to Textron who later sold it on.
Antique and vintage Gorham silver spoons are still highly sort after by collectors today. Many collectors will travel to find a rare Gorham silver spoon including berry spoons, ice cream spoons, table spoons and more. There are of course a multitude of online resources available to buy, research and discuss you favourite Gorham spoon.
